In the late summer and fall, when the heat is not so unbearable, the animals are active throughout the day and feed intensively to store fat. Males are usually larger than females, yet are not fully mature until they are 12 months of age.

The species spends about half of their lives in winter dens. They often dig their own dens; yet can use rock caves or hollow trees sometimes. They are active during the morning and early evening hours and prefer to stay in their dens in the daytime.
