Grizzly Bears - Cubs
The cubs of Grizzly bears are born in the middle of winter. The litter usually consists of 1-4 hairless and blind babies. They are immature and weigh about 500 g. They snuggle up against the mother's side and suckle fat-rich milk. In April or May, the mother with cubs comes out of the den, but the cubs cannot go far from the mother since are still fed milk.
Even though Grizzly females are very devoted mothers, not all cubs survive to become adults. Adult males are a serious threat to them, so the mother takes her family to remote areas or takes refuge in areas with high human activity because males avoid these places. However, it increases the risk of contacts with people and the chance that poachers will kill the Grizzly bear cubs.
Grizzly Bears - Habits
Grizzly bears spend about half of their lives in winter dens. Pregnant females are the first to enter the den and the last to come out. Grizzlies often dig their own dens, but sometimes use rock caves or hollow trees. Most Grizzly bears are active during the morning and early evening hours. During the daytime they escape the heat by staying in their dens. During the late summer and fall, Grizzly bears are active throughout the day to have much time for getting fat.
